![]() JBS: Is there any way to know if your device is being throttled?ĬS: Sure, I personally can see some animation stutter but there are also a few tools out there which can read current processor speed or can benchmark your device. I’m assuming that Apple really tried too hard to get as much power in their devices and also get the most battery life and failed to find the right setting. Normally a device manufacturer has to calculate battery capacity and device power consumption quite precisely to prevent a sudden shut down. Due to law of physics the maximum amount of amperage you can take from a battery depends on temperature (when a battery gets cold, you cannot take as much power from it as when it was warm, you also see this on car batteries in winter) and charge level (you cannot take as much power from the battery when it has a low charge level). Jean Baptiste Su: How would you explain that a phone shuts down even though it says there's 20% or more battery charge left?Ĭhris Sinai: This is a quite complex technical (and chemical) topic but in short: A battery isn’t like a bucket full of energy where you can take from until it is empty. Sinai's battery application also offers other interesting pieces of information like the age of your battery, the cycle count (how often was your battery loaded from 0% to 100%) which should be kept low to increase your battery life, as well as the temperature inside your battery.īelow is an edited transcript of my e-mail conversation with Sinai about why iPhones suddenly shut down and his views on the performance throttling issue. ![]() In our tests, the batteries on the iPhone 5 (28.8%) and 6S (76.6%) need to be replaced whereas the 2-year old 6S Plus is right on the edge (80.8%) and the brand new iPhone X is already down a notch (99.5%). It shows your battery's current charge level, its full charge capacity and most importantly its design capacity, which is the original capacity your battery had when it left the factory.Īpple officially calls a battery “bad” when its health falls below 80% within the first 1000 charge cycles. Mac developer Chris Sinai released a free application, coconutBattery, that measures the current health of your Mac's internal battery as well as any iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) attached to it. However, in the meantime, Apple is still banning battery-health apps from the App Store for security reason. The tech juggernaut, that just had the best iPhone year ever in 2017, also promised that the update will show the phone’s battery health and a recommendation to whether the battery needs to be replaced.
